sedimentary rock with dinosaur footprints

Museum of Natural History

Amherst College, Amherst, MA

This new museum houses the world’s largest collection of dinosaur trackways with more than 21,000 impressions in 1,000 sandstone slabs and one of New England’s leading vertebrate paleontology collections. Nearly 8,500 specimens representing 800 mineral species from around the world are highlighted in corridor display cases linking the museum to the classroom and research facility on each floor.

Covering three floors, the permanent exhibits reflect—in both form and materials—the architectural detailing and technology of the new laboratory and museum designed by Payette Architects. The museum is a prominent feature of the building and presents a 21st-century interpretation of a 19th-century natural history museum.

During the design, MDA also helped to assess and prepare the original collection to be moved from the Pratt Museum to this new facility.
