Captive Passage: The Transatlantic Slave Trade
& the Making of the Americas

The Mariners' Museum, Newport News, VA

This traveling exhibition about the transatlantic slave trade explores the impact slavery had on the history, culture, and commerce of four continents over four centuries. MDA was pivotal in distilling and organizing years of research and development. The visitor experiences a journey departing from the coast of Africa through the middle passage to their arrival in the Americas and beyond to the legacy the Africans created. A sense of place is created through large murals art-directed by MDA, environmental sound, and abstracted recreations of both the hold and the deck of a slave ship.

MDA worked closely with the museum’s in-house fabrication department to produce the exhibit, as well as selecting and coordinating media and interactive software/hardware vendors.
