I Am the City

Baltimore City Life Museums, Baltimore, MD

This exhibition relates the story of Baltimore history over three centuries through the contributions of notable and everyday citizens. Four period environments provide a context for the museum’s collection, special living history performances and media and interactive elements.

Theatrical settings included a 19th-century public market, neighborhood row houses, the 1940s theater district and a center for Afro-American life, and a fully restored and working White Tower restaurant. MDA provided art direction, creating over 200 linear feet of historically accurate, custom-painted murals as set backdrops. MDA staff designed and detailed all sets and treatments.

MDA worked closely with museum staff and architects to define the building program for this new facility and participated in a formative evaluation process to develop the exhibit content. MDA was responsible for all aspects of design, bidding, and supervision of exhibit fabrication and installation.
