Inspired by China: Contemporary Furnituremakers Explore Chinese Traditions
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA
In an innovative, cultural exchange, the Museum gathered 22 international studio furnituremakers to study historic Chinese furniture and then craft their own interpretations. The resulting spectacular array of furniture honors the form, materials and craftsmanship of their Chinese counterparts, while creating a contemporary presence all their own.
MDA’s design juxtaposes the traditional and contemporary objects, focusing on the artistic voice. Each gallery is organized thematically with a unique treatment—an introduction highlights the traditional altar table with responses to its form; a gallery places furniture within an architectural context; another gallery exhibits objects inspired by natural forms, and the exit gallery reveals the influence of the Ming dynasty style. Stained bamboo decks showcase historic objects, while contemporary objects are defined by elegantly sweeping rails. These rich and varied galleries fulfill PEM’s goal to create an unusual fine arts presentation.
