Daniel Chester French:
Transforming a Nation Through Sculpture
Chesterwood Estate & Museum and National Trust for Historic Preservation, Stockbridge, MA
Daniel Chester French was one of America’s most important sculptors and a key figure during the American Renaissance movement from 1876 to the start of the World War I. He created some of the country’s most recognizable icons, including The Minute Man in Concord, MA and Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.
Collaborating with the preservation firm of Francoise Bollack Architects, MDA renovated the existing Barn Gallery into a permanent interpretive center and museum shop at Chesterwood, French’s summer estate and artist studio in Stockbridge, MA. MDA designed wayside and orientation exhibits, the core interpretive exhibition, new gallery lighting and a computer learning and resource center. MDA provided concept through final design drawings, bid documents, specifications and fabrication supervision.
